Scoop more than you think you need to
The single biggest cause of smell is waste sitting in the box. Scoop at least once a day, twice if you can, and do a full litter change and box wash regularly. A clean box barely smells at all; a neglected one will overpower a small room within hours. This one habit does more than any spray.
Get the litter and depth right
Use a good clumping litter deep enough — around 5 cm — so urine forms solid clumps you can lift out cleanly instead of soaking into the base. Unscented clumping litter usually controls odour better than heavily perfumed types, which many cats dislike anyway and which just mask smell rather than trap it.
Contain the box in furniture
An open tray lets odour and dust escape into the room freely. Enclosing the box changes everything.
