Dhaka summers are brutal, and cats feel the heat far more than we realise. Covered in fur and unable to sweat the way we do, an overheated cat can quickly become listless, stop eating, or in the worst cases suffer heatstroke. The good news: with a few simple changes — and the right place to rest — you can keep your cat comfortable right through the hottest months.

How to tell your cat is too hot

Cats are quiet about discomfort, so watch for the signs. Panting or breathing through an open mouth is a red flag in cats — unlike dogs, they rarely pant unless genuinely struggling. Other clues include sprawling out on cool tile floors, grooming excessively to wet their fur, drinking less, and becoming unusually sluggish. If you notice heavy panting, drooling, or wobbliness, move your cat somewhere cool immediately and offer water; these can be early signs of heatstroke.

Simple ways to cool your home for your cat

You don’t need air conditioning to keep a cat comfortable. Keep curtains drawn during the hottest part of the day to block direct sun, and open windows in the early morning and evening to let cooler air move through. Always leave out plenty of fresh water — some cats drink more from a wide bowl or a second bowl in another room. A damp towel your cat can lie on, or a frozen water bottle wrapped in cloth placed near their favourite spot, gives instant relief. Most importantly, make sure the coolest resting spots in your home are somewhere your cat actually wants to be.

Why a breathable bed beats a padded one in summer

This is where most cat beds get it wrong. A thick, padded, plush bed traps body heat against your cat — cosy in winter, but miserable in a Dhaka June. What your cat needs in summer is airflow. A hanging Mesh Macramé Special Cat Hammock lets air circulate completely around your cat’s body, top and bottom, so heat escapes instead of building up. Because it’s suspended, it stays cooler than any floor cushion, and the open cotton knots breathe in a way solid fabric never can. It’s one of the simplest upgrades you can make for a hot-climate cat.

Handmade for Bangladesh’s climate

Our hammocks are hand-knotted in our Dhaka workshop from soft, sturdy cotton — chosen specifically because it breathes well and holds up to constant use in local humidity. Unlike imported synthetic beds that trap heat and hold odours, natural cotton stays cool to the touch and washes clean easily. If you have more than one cat, or a larger cat who likes to sprawl, the Mesh Family Hammock gives them room to spread out; for a freestanding option you can move to the coolest corner of any room, the Mesh Ghum Tori is a lovely choice.
